Tune In, Speak Up, Stand Out and Succeed - By Yvonne F. Brown
The current issue of Harvard Business Review has a front page article about "How to Survive the Boss From Hell." In the article the boss is someone who was passed over for promotion and so is now constantly sabotaging his employees, especially the competent ones.
At one point in the article, the boss (who his people call The Commodore) brought the team into a meeting and held up a plaque telling them "I'd like to recognize an employee whose contribution has been significant." Pausing for effect, he looked at each of them, then announced that the plaque was for Lorelei the Intern who had "reorganized his filing cabinet quite professionally."
Then he requested David come to his office at 5:30pm. After waiting for two hours David learned from the boss' administrative assistant that he had left at 5:30pm for the airport.
Sign of the times
It's tough out there today and many people are dealing with some of the toughest bosses ever. Often the employee feels lost and alone as they undertake numerous methods to cope. With the scarcity of jobs even those in the worst of situations find it difficult to speak up for fear of retribution.
Many hospitals report that a great number of patients arrive in the emergency room (ER) with stress related illnesses such as high blood pressure and heart ailments. Often this is caused by holding back, and not speaking up.
Sometimes holding back in this economy leads to a feeling of hopelessness
The repercussions of hopelessness
For women, feelings of hopelessness are not just unfortunate, they are a stroke risk, U.S. researchers say. They found that otherwise healthy women who are chronically hopeless are more likely to have a buildup of plaque in their neck arteries that can trigger a stroke.
According to Susan Everson-Rose of the University of Minnesota Medical School, whose study appears in the journal Stroke, "These findings suggest that women who experience feelings of hopelessness may have greater risk for future heart disease and stroke,"

Hell Bosses
In today's organization men and women sometimes find themselves managed by a boss from hell. Some of these hell bosses include:
- Blamestorming manager: One who sits in a group, discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed, and deciding who was responsible.
- Seagull Manager: A manager who flies in, makes a lot of noise, dumps over everything, and then leaves.
- TOT manager: A Terrible Office Tyrant who acts strikingly similar to children, oftentimes toddlers in their Terrible Twos (see article http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32568259/ns/business-businessweekcom/)
What to do about it
Recognition is the entry point to communicate successfully with these bosses. But you must know what to do, and how to do it, before you can execute it. And the better you know it, the more clearly you can communicate and work successfully with them.

Here's what people say about our seminars
I took a class on assertiveness but my company does not allow us to be assertive. I'm glad I learned the skills but what good is it if my office does not like assertiveness and doesn't give positive feedback? In the end, I could not relate to the assertive style because from what I can see real office situations do not accept that, and I don't believe every situation can be fixed.
Answer:
Assertiveness is a style of communication that allows you to say what you mean, and mean what you say, without being mean when you say it. This means that you stand up for your rights while allowing the other person their rights as well.
I realize that not all offices are supportive of this communication style. But, do not let this deter you from implementing the skills you have learned. If you cannot use these skills at work, then use them in your personal life. You can stand up for yourself in many situations. Try using the skills with family, friends, and in your customary interactions with service people.
By using the skills when and where you can, you integrate them with your communication style. Then as you experience the transformative effects in your life, you will soon find it easier to be assertive at work seamlessly and comfortably.

Biodegradable Cell Phone becomes Flower
Samsung and Sprint have teamed up to launch an eco-conscious phone with a biodegradable casing. Although many other phone manufacturers are making efforts to green their phones with various environmentally friendly components or carbon neutral schemes, the Samsung Reclaim is the first one to attempt to reduce its plastic waste.
A researcher in Britain has created a biodegradable cell phone case that when planted, will grow into a sunflower, according to a Local 6 News report. The eco-friendly cell phone cover has a seed implanted inside of it that grows into a flower in about two weeks.
