How to Exude More Confidence and Get the Job You Want

Confidence: The word conjures up images of self-assurance and belief in ones' self. Self-confidence is inward security. It basically means that your source of security comes from within yourself, you're confident in your integrity to your own value system. It is not congruent with doubt or fear.

I think that Franklin D. Roosevelt hit the nail on the head when he said, "Confidence thrives only on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them, it cannot live."

Confidence is not to be found outside of yourself, it is not an inherent part of your personality when you are born, but rather something that can be learned, honed and integrated into your daily behavior. You build or lose self-confidence by choice. It is something that can be destroyed by a parent, teacher, sibling or colleague by a thoughtless offhand remark that is taken to heart and integrated into your psyche. Often the event passes quickly and neither the giver nor the receiver is even aware of what has happened. This occurs whether it is used to build you up or break you down.

Luckily, if you have low self-esteem or a lack of confidence you can build these skills through your own motivation to do so. Sound simple? Well it is. You see, since confidence comes from the inside out, you can begin by acting as if you are self-confident. Begin with something small, pretend that you are confident and just do whatever it is that you lack the confidence to do.

Remind yourself of what Joe Palermo said, "If you're knocked down, you can't lose your guts. You need to act with supreme confidence or else you'll lose again, and then losing becomes a habit." It doesn't matter what your circumstances are, what's important is that you realize you are in control of how you respond and react to each situation you are faced with.

As Marie Curie said, "Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this something, at whatever cost, must be attained."

Remember what Eleanor Roosevelt said, "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face."

So, believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! With a humble but reasonable confidence in yourself, you will be successful in finding and getting the job you want. When you arrive for your interview bring your self confidence. It will make you stand out among your peers and help you be the chosen one for that opportunity.

With your determination to succeed, confidence in yourself and your abilities, you will not just survive you will thrive. Now it's up to you to make the first move.

Basic Coaching Skills for Managers

A manager's success is measured by how well they get work done with and through others. With today's workforce that consists of five generations it requires the ability to know yourself and the ability to determine what motivates your people. You need the ability to achieve team synergy and success. The single most powerful component of employee performance management is the coaching of employees by the supervisor. Coaching goes beyond personal employee growth. It requires results oriented commitment to the individual and contributes to meeting organizational needs. Be the catalyst that motivates your team to higher productivity and efficiency.

Course Objectives
This 2-day course covers four different types of coaching. You will learn:

  • Counseling: Awareness of employee's attitudes and behavioral changes that are affecting work
  • Teaching: Transferring skills and knowledge
  • Mentoring: Perspective on the employee's present organization fit and possibilities for future contribution
  • Challenging: Addressing performance deficiencies or stagnation.

I recently attended an event and was so caught up in the excitement that I bought the coaching products for sale thinking they could help me be more successful. I realize that I made a mistake because now that they have my money I am unable to reach the people I purchased the coaching from. They are always out or in a meeting. I think I've been scammed. Is there a way to recognize a scam or potential swindle? What can I do?

Answer:

I find your question interesting because scams are rampant in this economy. I'm sad to hear this happened to you but I recommend that you never purchase anything at these kinds of events without checking the fine print. Be sure there is a 30 day cancellation window. If they have not performed in 21 days cancel it immediately. You will have to follow up and ensure that they actually cancel the order as some of these people use insidious means to continue accessing your account.

A week ago I was on a cruise on Carnival Destiny and learned that one woman had signed up for coaching at an event like the one you mentioned in 2005 and still has not received the coaching she paid for. In addition, she didn't realize that they were charging her $79/month until the bank notified her they had closed the account because it was overdrawn. To this day she has never received any coaching and every time she calls she is told the "Linda does not speak to customers." She is still trying to get her money back. So the responsibility is on you to check your bank statements and close the account if necessary so that they can never do this to you ever again.

On the Road? Try These New Tools

Social media, such as LinkedIn and Facebook, have undoubtedly expanded your network and changed the way you communicate with friends and colleagues (not to mention your college roommates). Similar tools can help you with real needs when your business takes you on the road.

  • Use PhoneTag to receive your voicemail via email or text message. This transcription service delivers your messages so they are easy to read anywhere, anytime.
  • Use TripIt or Dopplr to create your itinerary and share your travel details with friends and colleagues. Connect with any contacts who might be in the same place at the same time.
  • Maximize your time in destination cities by finding relevant conferences or professional gatherings on Eventful and Upcoming.
  • Shoeboxed can scan and digitize the business cards you collect on the road so contact information is easily accessible when you need to reach out to someone you met.
